What is sustainability?
Sustainability is a way of development that meets the needs of the present without jeopardising the needs of future generations. It is using a resource from the environment that is renewable and can be put back into the environment.
There are many ways that I could make my building more sustainable:
Photovoltaic glass - acts as a solar panel but is more efficient as it changes the sunlight straight to energy as well as being able to act as a window as it is transparent, therefore being, multipurpose. It is expensive but worth the investment.
Ground source heat pump - pipes of water are situated under the ground and cold water passes through the pipes and the earth heats up the water in the pipes. It is expensive to start with, however after a few years the system pays for itself. A disadvantage is it might be hard to install.
Solar pannels - harness solar energy to turn into electricity that can be used around the building, for example, it can be used to heat up water.
How can I make my building more sustainable?
I will incorporate some sustainable features into my design. These will be a full side of glass so that natural light can come into the building so that not as much energy is used on artificial lighting. The glass I use will be triple glazed as they don't cause any disturbances whilst being fitted and insulate the building more than single glazed. I will also use photovoltaic solar pannels to harness solar energy, this can be used to heat up water in the building whilst letting natural light into the building. I will also use a cork flooring in parts of my building as it is durable and are good insulators.
