I have set my building against the standards of functionality that were set out by The Centre of Architecture and Built Environment.
Suitable for its Intended Use
The building is fit for its purpose as it is open planned and customers can easily move throughout the building. There are two floors filled with bouldering rooms and a strength and conditioning room whilst on the ground floor there is a café and shop allowing climbers to replenish once they've finished climbing and the shop is to buy new equipment. The building has been designed to maximise the space allowed.
Built to Last
I have used a range of high quality materials to ensure that the building has a long life span. The sustainable features that have also been incorporated increase the amount of time that the building will also be in use for. To ensure that the building lasts as long as possible, many of the parts can be easily replaced, increasing the life span of the build.
Adaptable
Due to the large exterior space of the park the building can be extended easily as well as the possibility of another storey. The interior is also adaptable due to the open plan space. It will also be very easy to change the holds and bouldering routes so that customers don't get bored. This may be once a month through the winter months and every other month in summer.
Safe to Construct and Occupy
Construction was carefully monitored and all the health and safety regulations were adhered to, at all times everyone on site wore suitable protective clothing, hard hats, hi-vis jackets and glasses for eye protection as well as at times ear plugs. The site was cornered off from the general public at all times as well. All of the building regulations were also adhered to and because of this the building is safe to occupy as all the standards have been met.
Sustainable to Construct and Use
Many sustainable features have been included in the build: the sedum roof to provide insulation and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air; the timber cladding which is a renewable resource and the full glass front which is triple glazed, insulating the building and allowing natural light into the building and minimising the use of artificial lighting. The building was also sustainable in construction as all of the workers were local, reducing vehicle pollution and the timber cladding was locally sourced reducing its carbon footprint.
Contributes to its Context
The building fits in well with its surroundings due to the timber cladding going well with the location of the park. However, at the same time it stands out due to its glass front giving it a pleasing modern aesthetic allowing it the building to attract customers.
Looks Good
The aesthetic of the building is pleasing as from the outside it is modern from the extensive use of glass but it also fits into the park. From the inside it feels as though you're outside in the fresh air due to the large amount of natural lighting entering the building and it has a modern, spacious feel as it is mainly open plan.
