The building that I chose to evaluate was the building of the local air cadet squadron which I attend regularly at.
The squadron contains:
- a parade hall with a divider in the middle
- 2 offices
- a small kitchen
- a radio room
- a store room
- foyer
- toilets
- a large outdoor space
These facilities allow for a selection of activities to take place. However, as the amount of members in the squadron increases there isn't enough space for everyone.
Improvements of the building:
- As there is little room for all of the young people who attend the extra curricular to partake in lectures the best option would be to extend the back of the building as the top is still flat and is rarely used or there could be a smaller extension to the side so only one extra classroom was added rather than extending the whole building. However, this would cost a lot of money.
- Rather than extending the building the roof could be removed and a second floor added adding ample room for more classrooms and offices.
- To make the building more energy efficient, solar pannels should be added to the roof facing south but as well as costing a lot it may not be the most cost effective solution due to the area generally being in the shade.
- To allow easier access for those in wheelchairs, the front step could be made into a ramp.
